The Power of Negative Thinking

How To Use Your Negative Thoughts For Positive Outcomes

It has become an almost universally accepted mantra of the personal development industry that the key to success in any area of life is to quash your negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Millions of people spend time every day repeating beautifully crafted positive affirmations about everything that they want to change in their life. There’s an enormous unwillingness to express the so-called negative thoughts that most of us, if we’re honest, have going through our heads at a rate that we would be ashamed and embarrassed to own up to.

The truth that a small percentage of people are able to use solely positive thinking to get where they want. Unfortunately, that just makes it worse for the rest of us who are diligently saying “every day in every way my life keeps getting brighter and lighter” and other such empowering gems, with results that are at best haphazard. We therefore sink further into an apparently downward spiral of thought patterns such as “I can’t get it right”, “law of attraction doesn’t work for me”, “I must be doing something wrong”, and so on.

Although so-called negative thoughts can indeed be a drag in our lives, the good news is that when accepted for what they are, they can be very useful to move us forwards. Here is just one way that this can be done:

Visualising the positive future that you want to create is a very common process. When you create a really detailed picture of what you want and fill it with sensory information, it can feel really great. Unfortunately, that great feeling can actually be counter-productive to getting what you want in the physical world as, surprisingly, it can trick your subconscious mind into believing it’s already happened, therefore reducing your motivation to do anything towards it.

Believe it or not, this process can be massively enhanced by introducing some negative thinking. By firstly creating a positive visualisation and then turning your attention to every obstacle (negative) that stands in your way of getting there, your natural creativity will actually kick in and start to build solutions and a pathway to making things happen.

When you do this, your dreams start in some way to become attainable, and that can be scary. You may start to feel emotions such as fear, overwhelm or conflict about your abilities and this is where the real work of achieving what you want and happen. By detaching yourself from the feeling connected to the thoughts, they may start to look less negative and actually become staging posts towards your exciting and meaningful goals. This is where the meridian tapping techniques such as EFT come into their own and start to become your secret success tools to creating your life of choice, rather than simple techniques to balance your day-to-day emotional state – not that that isn’t extremely valuable in its own right.

If you’d like to try this process for yourself, why not download the guided meditation audio on the right-hand side of this page “How to imprint your future into your subconscious mind in five minutes” and then brainstorm as many potential obstacles to that happening as you can? I’d love to hear how you get on in the comments section below.
