Motivation Mojo Part Two – Setting Inspiring Goals For Your Life

This is the second part of a series – if you haven’t explored your values using the process described in part one (link here) then I highly recommend that you do that first.

Once you are clearer on what drives you, you can set meaningful and inspiring goals. The first thing to do is create a vision for your life.

There are many ways to do this and when I’m working with people on this, I sometimes use a creative visualisation exercise.

First, I ask them to bring the feelings connected with their highest values into their body, so they are coming from an inspiring place.

From there, they visualise a life where they are fulfilling their highest values.

It sounds too simple, but most people just try and think about what they want. Getting into the feelings is much more powerful as it is gradually reprogramming your subconscious mind to seek out ways to feel that way more often.

After that, it’s time to write down as much as they can – either a free-flowing vision for their life, or a more structured approach of writing down AT LEAST 30 things they desire to have, do, be or experience in their life.

By the way, when most people do this, they realise that they could do, or commence many of the things on their list straight away. They are already resourced and able to do it. That can give a real boost, and the others become longer term aspirations to aim for.

However, when setting specific goals, which require actions to be taken, it’s best to look at what you want to happen within the next ninety days. This enables you to be realistic and practical about what you can really achieve, without overstretching and getting demoralised, or procrastinating due to a long timescale (eg a year) stopping you feeling any urgency.

You can get quite specific here on what is achievable in ninety days. For example, you may wish to become fluent in Spanish. While that is not realistic in ninety days, you could complete a basic course during that time.

After ninety days, you can build on your progress with a new ninety-day goal that gets you even closer to the goal of being fluent in Spanish.

And, this way, you can celebrate regular steps towards what you truly desire, which makes it a lot more fun!

One last point here. There will be things that you just have to do which don’t feel aligned with who you are and what you desire. I collectively term these as admin and once you are clear on these, you can work out whether they are actually essential, whether they can be streamlined and, ideally, whether someone else who is better equipped and quicker at them can do them for you!
